„AcropoLinz“ is a cardboard copy of the ancient Greek architectural masterpiece of the Akropolis‘s Parthenon in Athens. Its purpose is to impart the intellectual and cultural influence of fundamental European cultural assets to the population of the disreputable Linz suburb of Auwiesen. The historical role model seeks to regain lost terrain of urban architectural and universal cultural significance. Linz’s status as the European Cultural Capital City for the year 2009 is a fitting occasion for the replica “AcropoLinz” – a cardboard symbol of Europe’s very first
Cultural Capital City in the context of the “Festival of the Religions 2009”. The position of the generous cardboard sculpture constructed by the city’s own residents stands in stark contrast to the visual manifestation of the cramped row house settlement in Linz Auwiesen. Once the constructuion of the Acropolis has been completed, this monument will be left to the public and exposed to external influences such as the elements and vandalism. The collective feat of creating this gigantic sculptural replica of an ancient momument will be pitted against fast-motion erosion and ruin.
